SFNE Applauds Strengthened Section 232 Tariffs Supporting Domestic Industry

April 10, 2026

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PORTLAND, ME – On behalf of its members that fabricate structural and bridge steel, the Steel Fabricators of New England (SFNE) commends the Administration’s recent updates to the Section 232 Tariffs, reinforcing a commitment to fair trade and a strong domestic steel industry.

These updates, including the implementation of a 25% tariff on the full value of imported structural steel products fabricated abroad (10% if using American-made steel), represent another important step toward ensuring a level playing field for American fabricators and manufacturers. By addressing ongoing challenges posed by unfairly traded imports, the policy helps sustain domestic production, protect skilled jobs, and strengthen the U.S. supply chain.

“The role played by SFNE members in creating and maintaining the vital infrastructure of New England and the Northeast is indispensable”, said James McBrady, SFNE President. “We applaud the recent updates that further strengthened the section 232 Tariffs, and we will continue to push for further improvement. The reinvestment of our taxpayer dollars into local and regional projects is paramount to the success of our economy and development of our workforce.”

For fabricators across the country, consistent and enforceable trade policies are essential. The strengthened tariffs will help curb market distortions, close circumvention loopholes, encourage investment in U.S. facilities, and reinforce the value of domestically fabricated structural steel in both public and private construction projects.

SFNE remains committed to working with policymakers to support initiatives that prioritize American manufacturing, promote fair competition, and advance the long-term resilience of the structural steel industry.
