Volunteer to Serve on an SFNE Committee
June 2008 |
 |
You can get even more from your investment in SFNE if you volunteer to serve on a committee. As a committee volunteer you can help the association, make sure your company interests are heard and have more opportunities to network with your colleagues.
SFNE committee members plan educational programs, the golf tournament and develop membership recruitment and retention campaigns.
You may volunteer to serve yourself or you can nominate someone else from your company to serve.
Each committee determines how often they meet, but to save time, the majority of meetings will be held by conference call.

Connecticut Fabricators Support
Legislation to Provide Tax Relief
May 2008
|
 |
Connecticut fabricators supported legislation this session that, if passed, may help them take advantage of a tax exemptions currently available to other companies operating in the state.
HB 5939 was filed on behalf of an asphalt manufacturer to clarify that they can take advantage of certain manufacturing/fabricator tax exemptions in the state. Currently they cannot take advantage of the tax exemptions because they manufacture and sell the product (manufacturing/fabricator) as well as install the product (acting as a contractor). This places them at a competitive disadvantage to other companies outside Connecticut that sell the same product and that do take advantage of similar tax exemptions available in their states.
The structural and miscellaneous steel fabricators in Connecticut are also at a competitive disadvantage because they cannot take advantage of these tax exemptions because they too act as a manufacturer and a contractor.
The bill received a favorable report from the Joint Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee.
The General Assembly adjourned on May 7th, but SFNE members hope that an amendment may be filed next session that will include the fabricators in the bill.

Call to Action for Massachusetts Legislation
March 2008 |
 |
If your business operates or if you live in Massachusetts you may want to ask your legislators to support two bills that were filed by the Associated Subcontractors of Massachusetts (ASM), and that have been stalled on Beacon Hill for some time.
ASM has set up a "Call to Action" email program that will allow you to easily send a letter to your legislator and senator. If you support these bills ASM would like you to send your email message right away. It will take just a few minutes. With this new system, it's easy to get the names of your elected officials and quickly send off a message. Please follow the link below to send your message.

SFNE Members Support Prompt Pay
Legislation in Massachusetts
SFNE members are supporting the Massachusetts Prompt Pay legislation which was filed by the Associated Subcontractors of Massachusetts (ASM) to address the systemic problem of slow payment in the construction industry, by requiring all private construction contracts to include fair payment terms, with reasonable times to make payments, and strong incentives to pay timely. The bill was modeled on laws passed in Kansas, Arizona, Connecticut, New York and a number of other states. The proposed legislation promotes “prompt payment” as the industry standard, and applies payment requirements equitably to all parties involved in a project, including owners, general contractors, subcontractors and sub-subcontractors.
To move their legislative priorities forward the ASM Legislative Committee has decided to collect evidence of the problems by surveying members to find out if they have been hurt and if they have a story to share. With this information in hand legislators can be given real life scenarios and evidence that there is a problem that require a legislative solution.
If your company has been hurt by a low payment, a pay if paid clause or additional insurance requirement, and you are willing to share your personal story please contact Cathy Flaherty at 603-766-7363 or cflaherty@ssfne.org If you wish we can keep your story anonymous.
If you want to help pass the these bills it would also be helpful if you could provide your home address so that we can easily find the names of your home district legislators when it comes time to initiate a grass-roots campaign.

SFNE Presents Certificates of Appreciation
During the SFNE Annual Meeting Mel Nash was recognized for his contribution to the association. Mel drafted the Standard Proposal for Structural Steel and for Miscellaneous Steel. Both documents represent a major milestone for SNFE and have already proven to be helpful to members of the steel industry in New England. His legal work on behalf of SFNE will serve and protect the membership long into the future.
SFNE also recognized Bill Pascoli, the Senior Regional Engineer from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). During the years of the SFNE transition, the association has relied upon the services and assistance of Bill Pascoli to help plan of meetings. His experience and willingness to pitch in is appreciated.
